Stage 1: Germination (Days 2 to 7)

Germination is the seed cracking and pushing out a taproot. The whole job here is warmth, moisture, and dark, around 70 to 80°F and consistently damp but not soaked. The two reliable methods are the paper-towel approach (germinate between damp paper towels, then plant once the taproot shows) and direct-sow into your final starter medium. Direct-sow avoids the transplant shock of handling a fragile taproot, which is why a lot of growers prefer it.

The single biggest germination killer is too much water. A drowned seed rots before it sprouts. Keep the medium damp like a wrung-out sponge, not wet. Stage 2: Seedling (Weeks 1 to 3)

Once the cotyledons (the first round "seed leaves") open and the first serrated true leaves appear, you're in the seedling stage. Growth looks slow above the soil because the plant is building roots below it. This is the most over-loved stage in all of cannabis growing: seedlings are killed by kindness far more often than by neglect.

The two mistakes that account for most seedling deaths are overwatering and overfeeding. A seedling's root system is tiny and can't drink much, so a saturated medium suffocates it, and full-strength nutrients burn it. Water lightly around the base, not a flood, and either skip nutrients entirely for the first week or two or run them at quarter strength. Stage 3: Vegetative (Weeks 3 to 8, Your Choice)

Veg is where the plant explodes into structure: stems thicken, branches multiply, fan leaves stack up. It's also where your yield is largely decided, because the frame you build now is what holds buds later. The plant wants nitrogen-heavy nutrition, strong light, and an 18/6 light cycle (18 hours on) to stay vegetative.

Stage 4: The Flip and Early Flower / Stretch (Weeks 9 to 11)

Plan your light height and space for a plant much taller than the one you flipped.

This is peak nutrient demand for bloom feeding, and it's also when your environment becomes a crop-protection problem, not just a growth lever.

Trichomes are the tiny resin glands on the buds; viewed through a loupe or pocket microscope, they progress from clear to cloudy (milky white) to amber. Stage 7: Drying and Curing (Weeks 17 to 19)

The grow isn't finished at harvest; the last stage is where good flower is either preserved or ruined. Drying removes moisture slowly so the bud doesn't lock in a harsh, "green" smoke; curing then equalizes the remaining moisture and mellows harshness over time. The widely used starting point is the "60/60 rule," drying in a dark space around 60°F and 60% relative humidity for roughly 7 to 14 days, until small stems snap rather than bend.

Then comes the cure: the dried buds go into sealed jars opened ("burped") daily at first to release moisture and prevent mold, tapering off over two to several weeks. Autoflowers vs Photoperiods: A Different Clock

Everything above assumes photoperiod genetics, where you control flowering by changing the light cycle. Autoflowers are the major exception. They flower automatically based on age rather than light schedule, typically finishing the whole cycle in about 10 to 14 weeks from seed regardless of what you do. That makes them faster and simpler, with a fixed timeline, but it also means you can't extend veg to build a bigger plant the way you can with photoperiods.
