He'd had a textbook vegetative stage, healthy, even canopy, vigorous growth, clean leaves, and then his flowering room slowly fell apart over the following weeks. His humidity, which had been fine in veg, started climbing past 65% by week three. He fought it with a bigger exhaust fan, then a second clip fan, then a desiccant pack. Nothing held. The buds came in airy and a little fuzzy, and at harvest he found early bud rot in several colas. His takeaway was that he'd "messed something up" in flower. He hadn't, really. His mistake was assuming the setup that worked perfectly in veg would carry him through flower. It almost never does. A flowering plant is a fundamentally different organism than a vegetative one, and the environment, the training, and the feeding all have to adapt to it. Handoff 1: The Stretch (Weeks 1-3)
The stretch is the most action-packed phase of flower, and the one that locks in your yield ceiling. Decisions here set the canopy you'll harvest from.
What's happening: the plant is doubling (or more) in height, branches are lengthening fast, the first pistils (white hairs) start to emerge at internodes, and small pre-flowers form where buds will eventually pack. The plant is hungry for light and still wants a veg-like environment, warm, humid, vigorous.

Lights: if you ran reduced intensity in veg, this is the phase to ramp up to full flowering intensity, gradually over a few days to avoid shock. The plant is responding hard to light right now.
Training and canopy lock-in: this is the last window for major training. Install your trellis netting or finalize your SCROG screen now, before the stretch fills the space. Handoff 2: Bud Formation (Weeks 3-5)
This is when the buds you've been waiting for actually start filling the framework. It's also when the environmental demands quietly shift in ways most growers don't notice until something goes wrong.
What's happening: the stretch ends, structural growth halts, and pistil-covered bud sites at internodes begin to swell into recognizable flowers. The plant is now sinking everything into reproductive growth, the buds gain visible mass and density week by week.
Environment: bring RH down to the 50-55% range and ease daytime temps slightly to ~75 to 80°F. The reason isn't arbitrary, it's the canopy. By mid-flower your once-spacious tent is a dense forest of leaves and forming buds that traps humid air and transpires huge amounts of water. The microclimate inside the canopy can run 5 to 10% RH higher than your thermometer shows, and that humid pocket is exactly where mold starts.
Defoliation: a careful defoliation in this window (sometimes around day 21 of flower, sometimes a second pass around day 42 if the canopy stays dense) opens up airflow and exposes more bud sites to light. The rule: remove leaves that block light to developing bud sites or trap humidity inside the canopy, not just leaves you find ugly. Light, targeted defoliation; never a haircut.

Handoff 3: Ripening (Weeks 5 to Harvest)
The final phase: buds finish swelling and start to mature. The character of the plant shifts from "growing" to "finishing," and your room has to follow.
What's happening: buds reach their final size and start packing density and resin. Pistils that were white start to darken and recede. Trichomes (the resin glands that produce cannabinoids and terpenes) develop from clear to cloudy to amber. Late in this phase fan leaves often yellow and fall, that's normal senescence, the plant pulling stored nutrients up into the buds, not a deficiency you need to fix.
Environment, the late-flower targets: daytime temps lower to ~70 to 75°F, RH down to 40-45%, often lower in the very final week or two. Cool, dry conditions in late flower do two important things: they pull more resin and terpene production (the plant's natural defense response to mild stress), and they suppress bud rot in dense, mature flowers, where one infected bud spreads fast. Feeding: taper nutrients in the last 1 to 2 weeks, the common "flush" approach, or follow your brand's late-flower schedule (some modern programs run a gentler taper rather than a true flush). The goal is finishing on a clean, mature plant rather than a heavily-fed one.

The Environment Cliff: The Moment Most Setups Fail

Somewhere in mid-flower, usually weeks 3 to 5, the environmental setup that handled veg perfectly stops being enough. The grower notices RH climbing, fights it with more exhaust, and watches it climb anyway. Here's why.
A late-veg plant might transpire a liter of water a day. A mid-to-late-flower plant in a full canopy can transpire 3 to 4 times that, sometimes more in commercial setups. That's pints and pints of additional water vapor entering your room every day, and ventilation alone can't keep up unless your intake air is bone-dry, which it almost never is. Three things to know about the cliff:
- It's a transpiration problem, not a fan problem. Stop buying fans when RH won't come down. - The microclimate matters more than the meter. Air inside a dense canopy stagnates and gets humid faster than your wall-mounted hygrometer suggests. Circulation under and through the canopy (horizontal airflow fans, gentle clip fans pointed at the lower interior) is what disrupts those humid pockets. A dense SCROG canopy especially needs this.
- Late flower is the danger window for bud rot. Mature, dense buds are dense enough to hold humid air inside them. One bud with rot in a tight canopy can spread to neighbors in days. This is why RH down in the 40s in late flower isn't optional, it's prevention.

Common Flowering Mistakes
The patterns we see at the counter, and how to avoid them:
- Running veg nutrients too far into flower. High nitrogen after week 2 of flower means leafy, dark-green plants that struggle to put on weight. Transition to bloom-stage feeding once the stretch settles down.
- Training too late. Heavy training (topping, major bending) after the stretch ends just stresses the plant during its most important growth phase. Lock in canopy work before or in the first 10 to 14 days of flower, then leave the plant alone.

Think of flower as three different rooms. The room you ran in veg is roughly the room early stretch wants. By mid-flower it's a different room (drier, slightly cooler, denser canopy), and late flower is different again (cooler still, lower humidity, careful airflow). If your environment doesn't adapt across those handoffs, your buds suffer.
Lock in your canopy and training in the first two weeks of flower, then stop. Major work after the stretch ends costs more than it gives. Once buds are forming, the goal is a steady, quiet room, not an active one.

Trust late-flower yellowing. If it's on old fan leaves in the last couple of weeks, that's the plant moving stored nutrients into the buds, exactly what you want. Don't try to feed it back to green; let it finish.
