Dry too fast in too-warm air and those terpenes evaporate off, leaving you with bland or grassy buds. Dry too slowly in a damp, stagnant room and mold starts. The real challenge: most spare rooms, closets, and tents are too warm and either too dry (heated indoor air in winter, dry climates) or too humid (basements, summer humidity, recently-harvested plants releasing moisture). Hitting 60/60 reliably almost always requires active environmental control, the same kind of gear you use for the grow itself, repurposed for the dry.

The practical setup:

  • The room. Dark, dry, and small enough that you can actually control it. A spare tent (4x4 or larger) works beautifully because it isolates the environment. A closet works if you can manage temp and humidity inside it. Open rooms are harder because the air volume is too large.
  • Temperature. 60-68°F is the target window. A small space heater or AC can hold it; in moderate climates it's often manageable with the building's HVAC. Avoid swings, steady is better than perfect.
  • Humidity, the hard one. This is where most growers lose the dry. If your room runs above 65% RH, you need a dehumidifier, the same kind you used through flower. Step-by-Step: Drying

  1. Decide your trim style (wet or dry). Wet trim means trimming the sugar leaves off right after chop, before drying. Dry trim means leaving the leaves on, drying the whole branch, then trimming after. Wet trim is faster, easier (the leaves are stiff and easy to cut), and reduces mold risk in humid climates because there's less material to trap moisture. Dry trim is gentler on terpenes (the leaves act as a buffer slowing moisture loss) and often preferred in dry climates. If your dry room runs humid, lean wet; if it runs dry, lean dry-trim.
  2. Hang upside down. Cut branches into manageable lengths (12-18 inches) and hang upside down from a line, hanger, or rack. The buds dry hanging in still, dim air; gravity helps shape them. Alternative: drying racks (flat mesh trays), better for limited vertical space or single-bud drying.

The Stem-Snap Test (and Why "Feels Dry" Lies)

The single most-quoted readiness test, and worth getting right. Take a smaller stem branching off the main one, ideally 1/8 inch thick or so, and bend it. There are three possible results:

  • Bends without snapping: not dry yet. The interior of the bud and the stem still hold significant moisture. Keep drying.
  • Snaps cleanly with a small audible "crack": ready. The exterior is dry, the interior has lost most but not all of its moisture, and you're at the right point to begin curing.
  • Snaps and crumbles, or the buds shatter when handled: over-dried. You've gone past the window and pulled too much moisture. This is bad news (see below).

The "feels dry on the outside" check that growers default to is misleading. Buds dry from the outside in, and an outside-dry bud can still have a wet core that will sweat moisture back into your jars and cause mold. The stem snap is what tells you the core is also dry enough. Test multiple stems on multiple buds, the bud closest to the main stalk usually finishes last.

The Over-Dry Trap (the One Nobody Warns Enough About)

Every guide warns about not drying long enough, mold in the jar is dramatic and easy to talk about. The opposite problem, over-drying, is just as common, harder to fix, and underplayed in most guides. The grower at the top of this article over-dried in 72 hours and lost his harvest's quality. Here's the trap.

When buds dry too fast (too warm, too dry, too direct airflow), several things happen at once: the terpenes evaporate off rapidly rather than concentrating, the chlorophyll doesn't have time to break down properly, and the moisture in the interior gets pulled out before the cure can really begin. The result is brittle, crumbly buds that smell faint or grassy, taste harsh, and have lost the smoothness a good cure produces. The buds will never quite recover even with a long cure, because the cure works on moisture-driven enzymatic processes, and you've removed too much of the moisture for them to run.

How to avoid it:

  • Watch your RH, not just temperature. A room at 70°F and 40% RH dries buds faster than one at 75°F and 60% RH. Humidity is the bigger driver than temperature, and the one most growers ignore.

Curing in Jars: The Burping Discipline

Once stems snap, the dry is done and the cure begins. The cure is where good cannabis becomes great cannabis, the slow, controlled redistribution of remaining moisture inside the bud while enzymes finish breaking down chlorophyll and other compounds. Done right, it dramatically smooths the smoke, deepens the aroma, and stabilizes potency. Done wrong (or skipped), buds taste grassy and harsh forever.

The process:

  1. Trim if you haven't. Clean off remaining sugar leaves.
  2. Jar. Wide-mouth quart mason jars are the standard. Fill each jar to about 75% capacity, loose, not packed. Buds should rest against each other with air gaps between, no compression.
  3. Add a hygrometer. A small digital hygrometer in each jar (or at least one per batch) lets you read jar RH at a glance. This is the only way to know whether the cure is going right.
  4. Seal and watch the first 24 hours. After 2-4 hours, check the hygrometer. The ideal initial reading is 60-65% RH. If above 70%, buds are too wet, take them out and dry another 12-24 hours, then re-jar. If below 55%, buds were over-dried, see the rehydration note above.
  5. Burp daily for the first week. Open each jar for 5-10 minutes once a day, ideally at the same time each day, to release built-up moisture and refresh the oxygen. Watch for any musty smell when you open (mold) or sweating on the jar walls (still too wet). Toss the buds gently to redistribute.
  6. Taper burping. After the first week, if jar RH is stable around 58-62%, drop burping to every 2-3 days. By week 2-3, once a week is enough. By week 4+, sealed and stored is fine.
  7. Cure for at least 2-4 weeks. Real noticeable smoothing kicks in around week 2. The 4-week mark is where most home growers stop. A 6-8 week cure is meaningfully better. Connoisseur-level cures run months. You can't really over-cure; you can only fail to start.

Storage After the Cure

Once the cure is stable (jar RH steady at 58-62%, aroma fully developed), seal the jars and store them in a cool, dark place. The three enemies are light (degrades cannabinoids and terpenes), heat (accelerates degradation), and oxygen (oxidation). A dark cupboard at room temperature is fine for months; a wine fridge at 55°F is the gold standard for long-term storage. Avoid plastic bags (not airtight, static-prone, picks up plastic smell over time) and the freezer (frozen trichomes get brittle and snap off when handled, you lose the very thing that gives the flower its potency).

  • Skipping the cure entirely. Some growers dry and start smoking. Buds taste grassy and harsh; the cure was the part that would have fixed it. Even two weeks helps enormously.
  • Packing jars too full. Tightly packed buds can't release moisture and start molding. 75% full, loose, not compressed.
  • Plastic bags or non-airtight containers. Plastic isn't airtight, picks up odor, and lets buds dry out or rehydrate uncontrollably. Mason jars only.
