Bud rot starts inside dense colas where a wall hygrometer can't see. The honest guide: the cola microclimate, no cure once visible, and how to actually prevent it.
A grower came in gutted, he'd lost his three biggest, fattest top colas to bud rot in the final two weeks of flower, and he couldn't understand it because his room had been holding a "safe" 50% humidity the whole time. He'd done everything the guides told him: kept the room RH down, run his exhaust, watched his hygrometer. And the rot still hollowed out his best buds from the inside. When we talked it through, the answer was the thing almost every bud rot guide gets wrong: his room humidity was fine, but the humidity inside those dense colas was a swamp. A wall hygrometer reading 50% tells you nothing about the 85-90% microclimate trapped deep inside a fat, tightly-packed cola with no air moving through it. That's where botrytis lives, and that's why the biggest, best-looking buds are the ones that rot first.
Bud rot is the most heartbreaking problem in growing because it strikes at the finish line and it targets your best flowers. But it's also one of the most preventable, once you understand that it's not really a "keep your room dry" problem, it's a microclimate problem you solve structurally, with how you build your canopy and how you move air through it, long before you reach for a dehumidifier setting. This guide tells the truth the best growers know: why your room humidity reading lies, why there's no cure once you see it, the blunt answer on whether you can smoke it, and how to actually prevent it. The 30-Second Answer
- What it is: bud rot is gray mold (the fungus Botrytis cinerea) that infects dense flowers and rots them from the inside out, usually in late flower (weeks 6-8) and especially in big, tightly-packed colas.
- The key truth: your room's humidity reading isn't the number that matters. The air trapped inside a dense cola can sit at 85-90% RH even when your room reads 50%. Bud rot is a microclimate problem, manage airflow and canopy density, not just the wall hygrometer.
- There's no cure once it's visible. Once you see brown/gray rot inside a bud, the fungus has already spread beyond what you can see. Cut it out generously (well into healthy tissue), isolate the plant, and protect the rest, you can't save the infected bud.
- Never smoke it. Moldy buds carry fungal spores that pose real respiratory and allergic risks. Don't dry it, smoke it, or make edibles from it. Throw infected material away.
- Prevention is structural + environmental: manage canopy density (training, defoliation) so air reaches bud sites, move air through the canopy, hold RH ~45-55% with dehumidification, manage VPD, and dry properly after harvest.
What It Is and What It Looks Like
Bud rot is caused by Botrytis cinerea, a widespread fungus also called gray mold. Its spores are essentially everywhere, in the air, on other plants, carried in on clothing and pets, so you can't keep spores out. What you control is whether they germinate, and they germinate when they find moisture, still air, and dense plant tissue. Cannabis flowers are uniquely vulnerable because they stack calyx on calyx into thick, moisture-trapping structures that hold humidity better than almost any other crop.
The cruel part is that it starts inside the bud, hidden, and you often don't see it until there's significant damage. Here's how to catch it:
- The single-leaf tell. The most common early warning is a single small sugar leaf sticking out of an otherwise healthy cola that has wilted, yellowed, or dried up while everything around it is fine. That lone dying leaf is often rot working inside the bud beneath it. Pull gently, if it slides out easily and the bud beneath is brown and mushy, you've found it.
- Inside the bud. Early infection looks like dark, wet-brown, unhealthy, soft tissue inside the cola, not yet fuzzy. As it advances it turns to gray or white fuzzy mold and the bud becomes mushy, brown, and structurally collapsed.
- The smell. Advanced bud rot has a musty, damp, rotting smell, distinct from healthy flower aroma.
- Where to look. Check the biggest, densest colas first and the interior of the canopy, that's where the microclimate is worst. Inspect daily in late flower, especially after any humidity spike.
Why Your Room Humidity Reading Lies
This is the insight that separates growers who beat bud rot from growers who keep losing colas despite a "safe" room. It deserves its own section because it's the crux of the whole problem.
Your wall-mounted hygrometer measures the ambient room air. But botrytis doesn't germinate in your room air, it germinates inside the bud. And the microclimate inside a big, dense, tightly-packed cola is completely different from the room: the flower is constantly transpiring moisture, that moisture gets trapped among the densely-stacked calyxes, and if no air is moving through that cola, the humidity inside it can climb to 85-90% even while your room reads a comfortable 50%. That trapped, humid, still pocket is botrytis paradise sitting in the middle of your best bud.
Two consequences follow directly, and they reframe everything about prevention:
- Room RH is necessary but not sufficient. Yes, keep your room in the 45-55% range. But hitting that number doesn't mean you're safe, because it says nothing about the cola interior. Growers who think "my room's at 50%, I'm fine" are exactly the ones who get blindsided.
- Airflow and canopy density are the real levers. The way you actually lower the humidity inside a cola is by getting air moving through it (so trapped moisture is carried away) and by not letting the canopy get so dense that air can't penetrate. That's why prevention is structural, it starts with how you built and trained the plant, not with a dehumidifier dial.

What Actually Causes It
Every cause of bud rot is really an input into that cola microclimate. Control these and you control the rot:
- High humidity (the fuel). Ambient RH above ~55-60% in flower pushes the cola interior into the danger zone. Late flower especially wants RH in the 40s.
- Stagnant air (the enabler). Still air lets moisture pool inside and around buds. Air movement through the canopy is the antidote, this is arguably the single most controllable factor.
- Dense bud structure (the trap). Big, tightly-packed colas and thick canopies trap moisture and block airflow internally. Some genetics are far more prone (dense indicas) than others (airy sativas).
- Cool temperatures + dampness. Botrytis thrives in cool, damp conditions, which is why the cooler lights-off period (when RH naturally rises) is a common danger window, and why outdoor autumn is so risky.
- Stressed or damaged plant tissue. Wounds from pests (spider mite webbing traps moisture, see our spider mites guide), physical damage, or stress give spores an easy entry point.
If You Have It Right Now
If you find active bud rot, act immediately, it spreads fast, and every hour matters in a dense canopy:
- Cut it out generously. Remove the infected bud and cut well into healthy-looking tissue around it, an inch or two beyond what looks rotted. The fungal threads (hyphae) have already spread past the visible damage, so timid trimming leaves infection behind. Cut generously or lose more.
- Don't do it over your other plants. Removing infected buds releases spores. Cut carefully, ideally bag the infected material as you remove it, and take it away from your grow, don't let it touch or drift onto healthy plants. Don't compost it near your garden.
- Sterilize between cuts and wash your hands and tools so you don't spread spores to healthy colas.
- Isolate the plant if you can, and inspect every other plant closely, rot often shows up in multiple places once conditions are right.
- Fix the conditions immediately. Drop the humidity, increase airflow through the canopy, and defoliate to open it up. If you don't change the environment, you'll keep finding rot.
- Consider an early harvest. If you're close to harvest and rot is spreading faster than you can manage, harvesting now to save what's clean is often the right call, a few days of lost ripening beats losing the whole crop to mold. What you can't do: cure the infected bud, fungicide-spray it away in flower (fungicides don't reverse internal infection and ruin the buds' taste/safety), or "wash" the mold out (bud washing removes surface dust, not internal infection, and just adds moisture). Once it's in the bud, that bud is lost. All you can do is remove it and protect the rest.
Can You Smoke It? (The Blunt Answer)
No. This one isn't a judgment call. Buds infected with botrytis carry fungal spores, and inhaling mold spores poses real respiratory and allergic risks, genuinely dangerous for anyone with asthma, allergies, or a compromised immune system, and a known risk for medical users especially. Smoking or vaping moldy cannabis puts live spores directly into your lungs. No amount of potency or "but it's just a little" is worth a fungal lung exposure. Infected buds should be thrown away, not smoked, not made into edibles (heat doesn't reliably neutralize the risk and the contamination remains), and not saved. If a bud looks or smells suspicious, the honest move is to throw it out. We'd rather you lose a bud than risk your lungs.
Prevention 1: Structural (Canopy Density and Airflow)
Because bud rot is a microclimate problem, the most powerful prevention happens in how you build and manage the plant, much of it long before flower. This is the part most "keep humidity down" guides underweight:
- Don't let the canopy get too dense. Strategic defoliation in flower, removing leaves that block airflow and trap humidity inside the canopy, lets air reach the bud sites. Targeted leaf removal (around day 21 and sometimes day 42 of flower) opens the interior. Remove leaves that trap humidity, not just ones you find ugly.
- Train for an open, even canopy. Techniques like SCROG and LST spread the plant into an even, well-spaced canopy where air circulates around every bud, rather than a crowded thicket. - Move air THROUGH the canopy, not just around it. Oscillating and circulation fans positioned to push air through and under the canopy disrupt the still, humid pockets inside dense growth. This is the single most effective structural defense, more important than the room's average humidity. - Don't overcrowd plants. Plants packed together limit airflow between them. Give each plant space for air to circulate.
- Choose genetics wisely if rot is a recurring problem. Dense-budded indicas are far more rot-prone than airier sativa-leaning strains. If you grow in a humid environment, airier genetics are a legitimate prevention strategy.
Prevention 2: Environmental (Humidity, VPD, Temperature)
Alongside the structural work, hold an environment that keeps the cola microclimate out of the danger zone:
- Hold RH around 45-55% in flower, dropping to the 40s in late flower. This is the ambient baseline that, combined with airflow, keeps the cola interior safe. Late flower especially wants it dry.
- Dehumidify, don't just ventilate. Post-Harvest Bud Rot (It Can Start in the Dry)
Bud rot doesn't only strike living plants, it can develop during drying and curing if buds hold too much moisture in stagnant, humid conditions. Even buds that looked clean at harvest can mold in the dry if the environment is wrong or dense colas don't dry through. The defense is the same logic: a controlled dry at roughly 60°F and 60% RH with gentle airflow, and curing at stable jar humidity with burping to release moisture. Outdoor Growers: A Different Battle
Outdoor and greenhouse growers face bud rot's worst conditions and have less control. Morning dew, fog, rain, and the cool, damp nights of autumn, exactly when photoperiod plants are finishing in dense late flower, are botrytis' ideal environment. A few outdoor-specific defenses: choose airier, mold-resistant, and faster-finishing genetics; harvest before prolonged wet-weather windows if rot pressure is high (a slightly early harvest beats a rotted one); shake or gently dry plants after rain so water doesn't sit on buds; improve airflow and spacing; and inspect dense colas obsessively as harvest nears. Outdoor rot can go from one spot to collapsed colas in a couple of damp days, so vigilance in the final weeks is everything.

Stop trusting your room hygrometer alone. A "safe" 50% room can still have 90% humidity inside your fattest colas. The number that matters is the one you can't read on the wall, which is why airflow through the canopy and managing density matter more than the room average. The biggest, densest buds rot first for exactly this reason.
Prevention is mostly structural, and it starts before flower. Train for an open canopy, defoliate to let air in, and move air through the plant, not just around it. There's no cure, so don't chase one. Once you see rot inside a bud, that bud is gone, cut generously, protect the rest, and fix the conditions. Don't waste time trying to spray or wash it away. And never, ever smoke moldy buds; a lost bud is cheap, a fungal lung exposure isn't.
